What is Monarch?
Monarch is a collection of open source tools and libraries for agent-based modelling, complex systems modelling, geospatial modelling and simulations. It aims to provide cross-platform modern tools for use in research, education and the commercial sector.
Why is it called Monarch?
The name Monarch was chosen due to how often the word Monarch related to simulation subjects or requirements. An important part of agent-based modelling and complex systems modelling is emergent behaviour (like a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis) or chaos theory like impacts (butterfly effect); Monarch butterflies are the most iconic butterfly. Additionally, the simulations are designed for large scale historical/archaeological simulations in which ruling Monarchs play a role.
